Vani Takes on the UN

Raisins~

I flew out to New York UN Headquarters after taking the SATs to attend the 63rd UN Women Commission on the Status of Women on March 22.

The experience was an absolute whirlwind. I arrived early morning to get my pass.

I can't believe I'm at the actual UN! The city was bustling and the energy at the UN was amazing.

I was able listen to world leaders discuss the issues, solutions, and updates on the status of women. It was very enlightening. Nearly 8000 delegates came from around the world, including United Nations Secretary-General Guterres, United Nations General Assembly President María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, United Nations CSW Geraldine Byrne Nason, UN Women’s Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and high-level ministerial officials attended the opening ceremony. They were really cool and it felt like such an honour to hear these people talk!

The day after, I gave my very own speech and screened my documentary.

I also received "Global Woman of Distinction Award" for my efforts of the "World Origin, Youth Power" Project. I'm beyond grateful to have my efforts recognised.

After my speech and screening, countless people came up to express interest in my project. It was amazing getting to hear their stories and interacting with them. There was so much positive energy!

The next on the itinerary was an invitational Youth Dialogue, "Take the Hot Seat". Here we discussed the rising role of women in politics in different countries and the efforts to empower women to pursue these roles.

I made some amazing memories this trip, met wonderful people, learnt new things. It was a once in a life time experience.

Anyways, I definitely grew a lot. I know I have much to learn but I'm confident in all the people I have met and will meet. This is just the first step for my "World Origin, Youth Power" project. Tune in for updates.

Alls the best!
