Upon visiting Mosuo, China's last matriarchy, I was deeply disheartened to see their glorious culture fading. Their formless language, generational disconnect, crippling economy are a few factors contributing to their cultural extinction. Thus I initiated "World Origin, Youth Power" to be a restorative force to their culture. While preservation is a goal, which is being sustained through documentation and connecting inheritors with youth, allowing Mosuo to evolve is the long-term plan.
Instead of "freezing" their culture, I hope to help Mosuo integrate with modern times while retaining their essence. My first step is through improving education, specifically cultural education, for the Mosuo youth. This way, instead of going into low-wage jobs for survival when they get older, they will be able to access better jobs with their education, they will also retain their cultural pride and identity, allowing them to connect with their roots. I am fundraising through crowdfunding and spreading awareness with my documentaries and photography.
I recognize that fading cultural identities and traditions are issues globally, and my next step is to expand my efforts beyond the Mosuo mountains!
Keep up with my efforts by checking out my blog!
